The Kingdom’s capital city is home to approximately 200,000 inhabitants. This bustling city is the main centre of commerce, religion, and governance. National Memorial Chorten

This Tibetan styled stupa was built in 1974 in the memory of Bhutan’s third king, His Late Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who is popular regarded as Father of Modern Bhutan. The Paintings and Statues inside the Monument provide a deep insight into Buddhist philosophy.

National Library

The History of Bhutan lies imprinted in archaic texts, which are preserved at the National Library. Besides thousands of manuscripts and ancient texts, the library also has modern academic books and printing blocks for prayer flags.

Tashichho Dzong

Also Known as the fortress of the glorious religion, it was initially built in 1641 and later rebuilt in its present glory by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck in 1965. The Dzong’s main secretariat building houses the throne room of His Majesty, the king of Bhutan. The Dzong is also the summer residence for the Central Monastic Body headed by the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot).

Centenary Farmers Market

During the weekends, most of Thimphu’s scant population and many valley dwellers congregate on the banks of the river where the market is held. It is an interesting place to visit and provides an opportunity to mingle with the locals.

Changangkha Lhakhang

This fortress-like temple and monastic school is perched on a ridge above Thimphu, south of Motithang. The temple was established in the 12th century on a site chosen by Lama Phojo Drugom Zhipo, who came from Tibet.

Buddha Dordenma

Buddha Dordhenma or commonly known as Buddha Point is located a short drive from Thimphu city center, visitors can get a good overview of the Thimphu valley from Buddha Point. It is one of the largest seated statues of Gautham Buddha in the world. Surrounding the statue is the Kuensel Phodrang Park, a popular picnic spot.

Royal Takin Preserve

The Takin is the national Animal of Bhutan. According to Legends, the animal was created by the great Buddhist yogi Lam Drukpa Kunley. Originally a mini-zoo, it was converted into a preserve when it was discovered that the animals refrained from inhabiting the surrounding forest even when set free.
